BAD ATTITUDE: The ART OF Spain RodriguEZ

I have always had a soft spot for the history of underground comics. As an 18 year old I worshipped Harvey Kurtzman’s Mad and Johnny Craig’s Vault of Horror, before moving into Zap, Raw, and Eightball as the times progressed and my taste evolved. So you can imagine my delight when I was approached by Susan Stern to create a title sequence for a documentary about her deceased husband, the legendary cartoonist Spain Rodriguez.

I started out by making paper collages from his work, trying to carve out my own take on Spain’s thoroughly absorbing style. Through the collage process I got really into cutting his work into thin strips — a technique that wound up playing a large part in the design and animation of the sequence.
